CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

‘You are charged with the Attempted murder of Marisa Lyndon, under the Criminal Attempts Act 1981, section 4.’

Kitty felt no elation as Vipond spoke the words. Kemp stared at his hands, shaking his head as the waves of legal jargon broke over him. Kitty sensed Vanita Mistry’s anger, so fixed her gaze on the surface of the table. She felt no triumph. As Kemp was led away she heard him shout his innocence all the way to the cells.

‘One less villain,’ murmured Vipond, glancing at his watch. ‘Got to be somewhere else.’

‘Would you like me to drive?’

‘Thanks, but no.’ Vipond scratched his cheek. ‘Look - I’m starting on the Liu case first thing. Can I leave you to do the housework on this, Locky?’

Kitty tidied the papers, tapping the edges on the desk.

‘Call the Crown Prosecution Service. Oppose bail - danger to victim blah blah. Let Kemp’s wife know the lad’s been charged and won’t be home for his tea. Not for ten years, anyhow.’

‘Sir.’

‘Cheer up, Locky. A result!’ He leaned towards her. ‘I’ll be in the Dog around ten. If you fancy a drink.’

‘Thanks. I need to get back. For Molly.’

‘Of course.’

Vipond filled the silence by scooping the paperwork into files and stuffing them into a cardboard box.

‘I have a couple of days leave due, sir.’

‘Lucky you.’ His voice was flat.

‘My daughter wants to visit her dad. In Paris.’

Vipond nodded, leafing through the sheets.

‘She’s still a kid, though she thinks different. I wondered. Would it be OK for me to take her there?’

‘As long as it fits in with the hearings,’ he shrugged. ‘It’s your time off.’

‘Marisa Lyndon is still in hospital…’

‘We can step that down. The Chief will be happy! We’ve removed the threat, so there’s no need. Is there?’ It was a challenge, rather than a question.

‘I’ll be back at work on Monday.’

‘She’s safe now, wouldn’t you say, Lockwood? Now that we’ve got the villain in a cell?’

Kitty ran the tip of her tongue along her lip. ‘Maybe we should keep the vigil going? In case she comes round?’

‘That can’t be open ended. The longer she’s in a coma, the less likely she is to wake up. It’s a hard fact. Would you keep it going six months? A year? I mean…we ain’t got the money.’ He raised his eyebrows. ‘We’ve charged Kemp. The threat has gone.’

Kitty nodded. He relaxed.

‘So you pop off to Paris!’ His smile did not reach those blue grey eyes. ‘What I do need you to do, Locky, is to box up everything at Mrs Lyndon’s bedside.’

‘Sir?’

‘The stuff in her bedside cabinet. Handbag. Purse. Chequebook. Cards. Letters. I took a look at everything, but now the vigil’s ending we need it all secured.’

‘You mean now?’

‘Why not? You’re not coming to the bloody pub, are you!’
